Rewards Credit Card Review: Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express

With the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express, the cardholder can get cash back rewards on common household supplies and foods at U.S. grocery stores and U.S. gas stations.  You can earn 6% cash back for your purchases at U.S. Supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases) and then 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and at select department stores.  A disadvantage is that after a year, the percent of cash that you get back drops to 1%.  Many people sign up because you get a $200 statement credit if you spend $1,000 with this card within the first 3 months of opening the account.

There are restrictions on what is considered a supermarket. Big stores that also sell electronics and camping supplies, etc. are not considered supermarkets according to this card.  So, Walmart and Target are excluded from the list of supermarkets that you can earn cash back points from.  Other disadvantages with this card is that there is a $95 annual fee and it's not as widely accepted as Visa and Mastercard.  A 2.7% foreign transaction fee is another downside to this card if you happen to be an overseas traveler.

What Other People Are Saying

Blue Cash Preferred Card

"I love this card. I just got my first statement and I was surprised to see I already got almost 30 dollars back in cash rewards mostly from the 6 percent back on grocery store purchases. I also already got my $150 dollar credit for spending $1,000 in the first three months. Zero percent interest for the first 15 months is a great help too. That is allowing me to pay off my other credit cards faster that do have interest charges. Three percent back on gas and one percent on everything else plus all the other perks make this a great card all around.  As others have warned, the grocery rebate does not include big box stores like Costco."

"I got this because I am a big grocery shopper, and this card gives me 6% cashback reward. Gas cashback is also good at 3%, which is still amazing. Definitely a great card if you buy a lot at supermarkets and pump a lot of gas."

My Conclusion

If you are a big grocery store buyer, then the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express could get you some cashback on common household supplies and foods at U.S. grocery stores and U.S. gas stations.  You can also earn 6% cash back for your purchases at U.S. Supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases) and then 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and at select department stores (Restrictions apply.  Walmart and Target are not on the list of accepted stores).  However, after a year, the percent of cash that you get back drops to 1%.  Many people sign up because you get a $200 statement credit if you spend $1,000 with this card within the first 3 months of opening the account.  There is a $95 annual fee and it's not as widely accepted as Visa and Mastercard.  A 2.7% foreign transaction fee applies. I hope that my review can help you decide if the Blue Cash Preferred Card is the right fit for you!
