Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump Product Review

The Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump caters to the mom who is occasionally away from her baby.  It is lightweight and made to be discreet.  The manufacturer also makes the Medela double-electric breast pump. They advertise this one as a great compliment to that pump.  This pump uses a 2-Phase Expression technology. It has a soft-touch, ergonomic swivel handle which makes manual pumping comfortable.  The Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump is compatible with PersonalFit breast shields.

All parts that come into contact with the breast milk are BPA-Free.  Included with your purchase of a Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump is a manual pump, 2 five ounces bottles with lids, 1 bottle stand, 1 nipple with collar, 1 cap, and 2 membranes.

It is 14.4 ounces in weight and the dimensions are 9 X 4 X 8 inches.

As of this writing there were 2,680 customer reviews and 120 answered questions. This is a lot to go on to get a great feel of how this pump performed for women who bought and used it.  I’ve read the reviews and questions and condensed what was said into the main topics.  I hope that you will find this helpful in picking out a breast pump.

Ease of Cleaning

The beauty of the manual pumps are that they don’t have a lot of parts to clean.  Mothers are busy enough without having to add on chores like cleaning.  So many of the comments on ease of cleaning were very positive.  One woman had this to say,

“I hate hate hate pumping. I especially hate cleaning all the millions of parts for the electric pump. I bought this and wondered why I didn’t buy it sooner. This thing is awesome and if I could go back I’d never have bought the electric one to begin with! Takes like 10 minutes and I usually get 3/4 oz – enough for a bottle. I was worried about my hand hurting but it doesn’t and doesn’t get tired at all.”

The price is very low on this pump.  Keep in mind that it is a manual pump, so there is not a lot to it.  The women who bought and used this pump really liked the low price.

Comfort

When a breast pump is uncomfortable women will comment that in the reviews. The last thing that a mom needs, is to be in pain while pumping out milk for her baby.  The Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump had good reviews in the area of comfort.  Women liked that it was not only comfortable on their breasts, but also on the handle.

One woman had this to say, “The Harmony is actually quite comfortable to use. The handle works easily, very smooth, and it spins so that you can use the handle in the most comfortable direction for you. I like moving it around to various positions while I pump…helps keep my hand from cramping up which can happen easily with the AVENT.”

Storage

For storing of the breast milk, The Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump comes with two 5 ounces bottles.  A nice feature is that the pump also fits on most standard bottles.  Women who commented about the storage really liked that this fit on most baby bottles.  One mother said what a lot of others were saying about the storage.

She explained, “I also really like that I can pump directly into the containers that I use for storage (these are not Medela but were provided at the hospital). This pump comes with TWO containers to pump into…where the AVENT only includes one….and if I was using these containers that would be a plus.”

Quite a lot of women didn’t use the storage bottles provided, but were happy that the pump was compatible with most baby bottles.

Efficiency

As far as efficiency,  it’s important to remember that this is just a manual pump, not an electric pump.  However, most of the women who reviewed this pump felt like it was efficient enough to meet their needs.  One woman commented this,

“This pump is so much better than Ameda. I mean is it as efficient time-wise as the electric?  No.  But it actually removed milk well, unlike my other hand pump. Highly recommend as far as hand pumps go.”

Another mom wanted to share this about the efficiency,

“I use my electric pump most of the time, but this thing is great in a pinch. The more I use it the more efficient I’m getting at expressing manually. Sometimes you just can’t sit by a plug for the length of time it takes to pump. With this, I don’t have to detach it and reattach every time my little one decides to spit out his pacifier and start to wail. Bonus points for it being silent.”

My Conclusion

If you are wanting an inexpensive breast pump, then you might want to try this manual pump.  Keep in mind that it may not pump as fast and efficiently as an electric breast pump, but it will get the job done.  A nice thing about this manual pump is that it is small enough to be packed in a purse or diaper bag. Some of the electric pumps can be quite huge.  Another nice thing about the Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump is that it includes two storage bottles.  Even nicer is that if you choose not to use the bottles, this pump should fit on most standard bottles. I hope that this review makes your life easier as you look to purchase the best breast pump for you.
