Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump Product Review

The Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump with an On the Go Tote is a high end breast pump that is very popular.  It utilizes a 2-Phase Expression technology with a one-touch let-down button.  Your purchase of this pump includes a microfiber bag with a built-in pump that holds everything that you need to pump.  A battery pack enables you to pump at anytime and anywhere.  It takes 8 AA batteries that are not included with your purchase.  A single knob speed/vacuum has adjustments that control the pump settings.  A removable cooler bag with contoured ice packs holds 4 breast milk bottles and an ice pack to keep the breast milk cool.

This pump is not lightweight, as it weighs a whopping 7 pounds.  This is heavy compared to most of the pumps that I've reviewed.  Despite the weight, this is still one of the most popular  breast pumps on the market today.

Ease of Cleaning

Most women thought this pump was fairly easy to clean.  Yet, a complaint that surfaced was that the pump cannot be taken out of the bag or opened to be cleaned.  Therefore, over time and use, this could mean mold is hiding in the pump undetected.

The price tag on this pump is definitely on the high side.  But, you are getting a quality breast pump with a lot of extra features like the 4 bottles, a nice storage bag, and the cooler bag to keep your breast milk fresh and cool.

Customers who purchased this pump liked that the pressure could be adjusted to individual comfort levels. Overall, most women said that this pump was comfortable.  Some women who commented found nursing to be very painful.  Some almost quit feeding their babies breast milk but felt like this pump saved them from stopping.

A woman who I will quote here was not the only one who said that this pump was more comfortable than her baby nursing from her.  She had this to say,

"I've been using this pump for about 6 weeks (my baby is 7 weeks).  I'm not sure it's typically recommended to begin using a pump that soon, but my baby had a REALLY strong latch and my nipples suffered terribly; in order to give my nipples an opportunity to heal, my LC told me to go ahead and pump if it was more comfortable.  Frankly, I was in so much pain every time I nursed, I wonder if I would have made it to where I am today without the pump. The pump was a blessing in those early weeks."

Storage

Women who purchased this pump liked the storage bag.  This customer reflected in her comment what a lot of women were saying,

"The tote is very cute. It has a lot of storage space for all your pumping accessories. The cool pack bag is very useful. Not only does it help keep the bottles cold, it is also a very good storing bag for traveling. I am able to fit four, 4oz glass avent bottles. This tote style pump is good for on the go as well as for at home."

As far as milk storage, included in your purchase of this Medela Pump is 4 breast milk bottles.  This is a good number, as some of the other breast pumps only come with one bottle.

Efficiency

After reading the reviews, it seemed like serious pumpers used this pump.  By serious, I mean moms who don't have time to waste.  And also moms who wanted to get the job done in the shortest and most efficient amount of time.

This mom who commented, was typical of the women who bought this pump,

"I have been pregnant or breastfeeding for the past four years and I have worked throughout. I typically work 70-80 hours a week with an unpredictable schedule. I write all of this to put my review in context. I am a mom who needs a pump that works very well and is user-friendly."

With that being said, this same woman said this about the efficiency,

"Excellent Double Pump: For the new moms, "double pump" means you can pump both breasts at the same time. The pump's letdown feature (applies pressure at a fast rate to encourage milk secretion) combined with the adjustable suction makes for effective removal of breast milk."

Portability

This pump comes with a bag that has a strap that can be slung over your shoulder.  It is a heavy contraption at 7 pounds, but the bag makes transporting it easy.  Keep in mind that this is not one of those discreet pumps that you can throw in your purse.

One woman had this to say about the portability,

"I have a really active lifestyle. I work 10 hours per day, so it is important to me to be able to have a pump I can quickly use and pick up and go. The backpack is really nice and portable. I like this style of bag because my hands are free to carry or do other things while still toting the back pack. The bag is really nice and discreet so that no-one would be able to guess what is inside, and all of the pockets have zippers so I'm not worried about anything falling out."

My Conclusion

If you have the money to spend on a quality pump,  I'd definitely consider the Medela Pump.  Because it is efficient and comes with everything that you will need to pump milk and store it, it's good for the working mom.  This pump seemed to be used more for the women who pump full time as opposed to occasional pumpers. I hope that this review helps point you in the right direction as you consider the best breast pump for you.
