10 Essentials To Have Stocked In Your Changing Tables At All Times

A changing table can make life so much easier when you have a baby because you have all of your supplies in one spot.  I’m going to go over some supply items that are essential for any changing table.  You may even want to have more than one changing table at your home stocked up with these items. I will go over everything you need to include below.

Diapers

Diapers are a must-have.  You will always want to keep diapers stocked up.  It is a good idea to keep some backup diapers, as this is an item that you can never have too many of.  You might not want to buy newborn diapers in bulk since most babies will grow to Size 1 fast.  When you buy the diapers, you may want to take them out of the plastic bag, so that you don’t have to while you are changing your baby’s diaper.  Make sure to store the diapers in a place that is easy to reach.

Wipes

You will want to stock up on wipes so that your baby stays nice and clean.  Make sure to buy wipes that are soft, unscented, and alcohol-free, so your baby isn’t exposed to harsh chemicals. Wipes are an item that you may want to buy in bulk.  You can never have too many wipes.  Not only can they be used to wipe baby bottoms, but they can also be used to wipe up the changing table when you are finished changing a diaper.

Changing Pad Covers

Just in case diaper changing gets messy, you will want to keep a changing pad cover stored somewhere for that day when you need to replace the one that you have been using. Changing pad covers are made for wiping down with ease.  You may want to have more than one of these around your house but especially at the changing table.

Hand Sanitizer or Hand Wipes

You are supposed to wash your hands after each diaper change.  But sometimes it is not convenient to walk to the bathroom to wash your hands, especially if you have your baby with you.  That is why it is a good idea to have hand sanitizer or wipes near the changing table.  That way you can quickly and easily wash your hands before you forget to.  It’s also a good idea to wipe your baby’s hands down in case he or she touched anything that they shouldn’t have.  Babies are very quick to touch messes, so it’s good to have a backup.

Toys to Distract Your Baby

Your baby may get bored lying there and therefore make it harder for you to change his or her diaper.  Toys are always good to have nearby.  They will distract your baby, and your baby will have a much more fun experience.  Good toys to have are toys that can be easily washed off with soap and water. Rattles and rubber toys are better than stuffed animals for sanitary reasons.  It is a good idea to wash the toys often to ensure that the toys are clean.

Rash Cream

Diaper Pail

You are going to want to have a close and convenient place to put the soiled diapers.  A diaper pail should be placed close to the diaper changer. You will want to be able to set the diaper in the changer without leaving the baby unattended, so close proximity is going to be important.  Make sure that the diaper pail has a good lid, so that smells don’t escape into the room. Also, children and pets have a way of getting into dirty used diapers.  The outcome will be much grosser than changing a soiled diaper.

Nail Clippers

A changing table is an excellent place to cut your baby’s fingernails and toenails.  If after changing your baby, he or she is quiet and calm enough to allow you to cut them then you will want to have nail clippers at the changing table.  It’s also a good place to keep them even if you choose not to cut them at the changing table.  I liked to cut my baby’s nails when she would fall asleep during the day.  That was a time that I knew she would be the stillest, so I’d cut them as she slept.  If you keep them at the changing table, you will always know where they are.

First Aid Kit

You never know when you will need a Band-Aid or other first aid item.  A changing table is an ideal place to keep a first aid kit. It’s also an excellent place to lay your baby down to put medicine or a Band-Aid on a wound.

Cloth Diaper

It’s good to have a cloth diaper to use as a burp towel in case your baby spits up.  They are also handy to use when you don’t want to waste a baby wipe on a mess.  A cloth diaper can serve a lot of purposes.

Final Thoughts

I’ve gone over some essentials to have stocked at your changing table. You may think of more items.  Overstocking a changing table is a good thing, so try to plan for all kinds of situations and products that you may need.  You never know when you will need something, so keeping it close by when you need it will make life much easier. Happy diaper changing!
