7 Ways To Keep Exercising Outside When Cooler Weather Strikes

Who says you have to run on a treadmill once October hits?

Hate the idea of working out indoors? Do you cringe at the thought of having to run on a treadmill? When the temperatures get cooler with the changing of seasons, it’s an excellent time to do some outdoor exercises. I’ve put together some ideas that will get your blood pumping.  I’ve also listed some tips for exercising in the cooler temperatures.

Jumping Rope

This is one of my favorites.  All you need is a rope and some music if you’d like.  Jumping rope is one of those exercises where you can get in a good aerobic or anaerobic workout in a short amount of time.  I like Fall especially for this outdoor activity because you don’t have to worry about slipping on ice, and you don’t have to deal with the rope hitting your ceiling because you can be outside.  Jump roping outside may even bring about a nostalgic feeling from grade school.

Walking or Running

Fall is perfect for getting out there and putting in some miles by walking or running.  If it’s a chilly day, layers are a good idea.  You can always peel off extra layers as you go and tie them around your waist.

Bicycling

Bicycling is such a great exercise for Fall weather.  Remember you will be colder than if you were walking and running because you are breaking through the air at a faster pace.  A wind jacket and hat (with a helmet over it) along with thermal biking gloves might be a good idea.  This all, of course, depends on the temperature.

Kayaking

Kayaking provides a great arm and aerobic workout if you keep up a good pace.  Walmart sells inexpensive kayaks, or you could go with a top of the line type at a sports store.  I like kayaking because nothing beats a water setting for some peaceful tranquility.   Keep in mind that some waterways will require you to have a permit sticker for your kayak.  You also may need to have your kayak inspected to make sure it’s clean. In our area, we need to get a yearly inspection and sticker that shows that we aren’t bringing zebra muscles into our mountain lake.

Frisbee Golf

Many parks now days have a Frisbee golf course.  Frisbee golf can be played alone or with someone.  You play it similar to how you play golf except that you throw a Frisbee into wire nets, trying to keep the number of throws that it takes to get to each net low.  If you want to get in a more vigorous workout, you could time yourself to see how long it takes you to make it through the entire course.  It’s fun to keep track of your time and try to beat it the next time.

Yoga

Yoga is especially enjoyable outside in the Fall. Try to find a peaceful setting to do some of your favorite yoga poses.  Imagine how wonderful it would be to do yoga on a beach or by a riverside with colorful leaves falling all around you.

Basketball

Round up a few of your friends or even some neighborhood kids for a game of basketball.  If you are all alone and can’t find any players, you can still do some drills.  Drills can be a great aerobic workout.   Run around the court while dribbling the ball and do some layups.  Or how about trying to make different shots around the court? However you decide to play, the point is to keep moving.

Summary and Tips

I’ve given you many ideas for how you can keep exercising during this cooler Fall weather. Fall is such an excellent time to exercise outside while breathing in that cool and fresh air. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure that you are getting out there and getting active each day.
