To Updo or Not to Updo? That Is the Question!

Struggling between an updo or letting your locks flow? Here are 7 beautiful hairdos for your big day!

If you are like many brides today, you have probably already made a board just for wedding hair or hairstyles on your Pinterest. You have probably pinned a countless number of updos, down hairstyles, side buns, bouncy curls or wand curls, braids, and more. But I can imagine what you are thinking as you go through the endless pins of wedding hairstyles.

There are so many! Where do I begin and which hairstyle do I want?

When it comes to choosing an updo or down for hairstyles, many girls take into consideration their face structure, their eyebrows, their neck size, and all of that other nonsense.

When the reality is, who cares!?!

If you want your hair up, wear it up! Do not fret over whether it looks good or bad, because you are the bride, and no matter what you have, you will look fabulous! Now obviously if you do not like one hairstyle, then do not feel forced to wear it! But it comes down to you loving it or not loving it, not whether your mom loves it or doesn’t love it, your maid of honor, etc.

But Christy… you seriously aren’t helping. I still don’t know whether I want my hair up or down on my wedding day! I simply can’t decide!

Okay, okay. I understand what you are saying! Take a deep breath because we (OurStart) are here to help you! I have collaborated some pictures of varying hairstyles, both updos and down, to help narrow down some of your choices!

This updo is absolutely stunning for any bride going for a simple look! The twists in the back give the hair the little spice it needs to jazz up the hairstyle overall. For those with thicker hair and want this look, expect a lot of bobby pins in your hair! But the heavy amount of bobby pins are worth the look! And for those with thinner hair, this is an easy and solid choice!

This beautiful down hairstyle is great for hair of any length, whether it be short and above the shoulders, long and down past your waist, or medium length and in between! The long and extended curls lay nicely on shoulders, and the hairpiece pulls back the hair nicely up top. This half pulled back look is great for anyone wanting their hair down on the big day!

This ballerina bun is one of the easiest and most simple hairstyles a bride can do. But it is by far one of the most beautiful as well! Your hair does not need to be curled for this style, and it is a stress free updo that will make you look like a beautiful ballerina bride.

This long and flowing hairstyle is gorgeous, especially accented with a beautiful headband or hairpiece. The curls are more tight and not as relaxed, which does require a bit more time than the more relaxed look. The bump in the back is very easy to achieve and can be held easily with extra bobby pins and a lot of hairspray. If you want the down hairstyle with a bit more snazz to it, this is a great option!

A very popular updo for brides these days are the side curls shaped into a bun. These looks are a classic and can suit almost any theme or style of wedding. Adding some jeweled pins or flowers in your hair would compliment this side bun very well. This style will work with any thickness of hair. It works well with medium length hair or longer, but a good hair stylist can help those with short hair work this look!

Instead of using a headband or hairpiece to spruce up a simple down hairstyle with curls, why not add a braid? Adding braids in curled wedding hair is another popular accent that many brides decide to choose for their hair because it gives the plain curls something extra, but is natural and not a hairpiece.

This look gives brides a vintage and glamorous look to their hair. So if you are going for a vintage themed wedding, this may be an option for you! The hair can be curled first or left alone, and then you simply roll it/flip it under and pin it back (I am not a hairdresser, so if a hairdresser is reading this, I apologize for my “no hairdressing knowledge” vocabulary).

This final hairstyle is the definition of perfection. Also known as a wonderful braid, or the waterfall twist, this simple braid that goes through the back of the head is stunning. It brings just enough attention to the hair, but is not over the top. If you decide on letting your hair flow, keep this style at the top of the list.

My hope is that you have narrowed down to whether you want your hair up or down. And from there, you have started choosing which styles you like more. If you are still stuck, maybe it’s time that you ask others for their opinion if you are that indecisive. But just remember that no matter what you choose, you WILL look amazing and you WILL be beautiful on your special day.
