Dr. Brown's Baby Bottles

baby bottles

I've covered Dr. Brown's baby bottles in detail under the review section. But these bottles are noteworthy enough to have another section. Dr. Brown's Baby Bottles are the only bottles to feature an internal vent system that helps to reduce colic, spit up, burping, and gas. This design eliminates negative pressure and air bubbles. It's designed to provide vacuum-free feeding that the company claims is similar to breastfeeding.

Philip's AVENT baby Bottles

Philip's AVENT baby bottle is also covered in more detail in our review section. These bottles feature wide silicone nipples with an anti-colic Air Flex Valve. These nipples also have ribs that help to prevent bottle collapse. The wide neck was designed for easy cleaning. AVENT makes their bottles in 2 ounce, 4 ounce, 9 ounce, and 11 ounce.

Comotomo Baby Bottles

baby bottles

The Comotomo Baby Bottles were designed to resolve existing problems with standard bottles. The company placed a non-leaking dual air vent that should help to prevent colic in newborns. They made the bottles wide enough for easy cleaning and used hygienic silicon material so that you won't ever have to worry about toxic chemicals. Please see the review section above for additional information.

Tips For Introducing A Baby Bottle

baby bottles

It is recommended to slowly introduce a bottle to your baby. Some like to offer a bottle in the evening after his or her regular feeding. Start with a small amount of breast milk and then gradually increase the use of the baby bottle as she or he gets the hang of it.

Another option is to leave the house and let someone else, like your spouse, feed him or her so they don't have another option. This is really going to be a matter of individual mothering, and choices of how you want to get him or her switched over from the breast to the bottle.

Types of Baby Bottles

Glass Baby Bottles

Glass bottles may seem like a thing of the past, but some people still use them because they are easy to clean. With these bottles you will be able to boil them for a deeper clean, and not have to fear them melting.  Some believe they are safer than plastics and other materials.

Bottles for Gassy Babies

If your baby is hurting from tummy pain, chances are good that it's due to excess gas. Gas can lead to a very grumpy and sad baby. Sometimes the reason a baby has gas is from an allergy or irritability to digest milk. But sometimes, just switching bottles can help to eliminate gas. Check out our individual review section above to find bottles specifically made for gassy babies.

Tips for Getting Breastfed Babies To Accept Bottles

baby bottles

Breastfed babies have fewer infections and are hospitalized at a much lower rate than formula fed babies. The best way to feed a baby is straight from the breast. However, this is not always possible, especially for mothers who are returning to work, have adopted, or are physically unable to. The second best solution if you can't be there to breastfeed your baby, is going to be to use a baby bottle .

Bottles are funny in that there isn't one brand that is going to be perfect for every baby. Each baby is unique and will have preferences that are her and his own. One thing that lactation specialists have found is that you need to give your baby time to develop the muscles that they need to switch from the breast to the bottle. Some babies may go through many bottles until they find one that is right for him or her.

The World Wide Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for a very minimum of 6 months, but notes that 2 years or longer is better. If you will be using bottles of breast milk, try to keep up with breast pumping for the best health outcome for your baby. See our individual review guides to learn about the best bottles for breastfed babies.

Advantages of Breastfeeding

baby bottles

Breastfed babies are at a health advantage over bottle fed babies. Breast milk contains infection fighting white blood cells and natural chemicals that help fight disease. Dr. Sears, a famous pediatrician states that one drop of breast milk contains around one million white blood cells.

Breastfed babies have the advantage that their milk will change according to their needs as they age. For example, the breast milk that a mother produces fro her premature infant differs from the milk she produces for a full grown baby.

Best Bottles For Colic

baby bottles

Many of the bottles on our review say that they reduce or eliminate colic. Some forms of colic can be caused by too much air being swallowed when the baby sucks from bottle. Many of the bottles on this top ten baby bottle list claim that they will reduce colic symptoms by reducing air intake.

Different Types of Bottle Nipples

Orthodontic Nipples are flattened to look and presumably feel more like the real thing, a woman's nipple.

An Angled Nipple is slanted so that it automatically tilts into your baby's mouth.

A Vented Nipple has a tiny hole in it that will let air into the bottle while your baby sucks the milk out.

Commonly Asked Questions:

When is the Right Time to Start?

Ideally, if you can breastfeed the whole time, then that is going to be much healthier for you and your baby. But this is not always possible, especially if a mom needs to go back to work. Remember that you can pump your breast milk through for your baby to ingest while you are gone.

.

Should I Buy a Bottle While Breastfeeding?

If you can get by without giving a bottle while breastfeeding, then ideally that is your number one choice. However, if you are planning on switching over to a bottle on a later date, it's a good idea to buy a bottle early and then gradually get your baby ready to accept it.

When Do you Need Bottles?

When you will need baby bottles depends on when you stop breastfeeding or whether you will be breastfeeding at all. A baby will need to suckle as soon as they emerge from the womb. So if you will not be breastfeeding at all, be ready to have bottles right from the moment your child is born.

Do I Need Bottles At All?

The question of whether you need baby bottles or not, depends on if you are planning on breastfeeding or not. I breastfed my child for the first few years and never used a bottle. However, you will need to be with your child at all feeding times if you choose to go bottle-less. It's definitely doable for many moms.

But, if you can't make that commitment for one reason or another, you will need to purchase baby bottles. Also, if you've adopted or physically are not able to breastfeed your baby, then bottles are going to be a must-have. Babies drink. A lot. And often. So whether you can go bottle-less or not, you'll need to keep the hydration and nutrition coming to your baby.

What Else Should I Purchase?

With a baby bottle you may also want a burp cloth. This is helpful for burping your baby after he or she drinks. If you have multiple children and multiple bottles, it might also be wise to invest in a baby bottle bag.
