What is a Rewards Program?

rewards program

A rewards program is a system that businesses use to keep track of how much you spent at their store.  Then they reward customers with cash back, discounts, trips, free merchandise, and more.  Each rewards program has its own system and own restrictions. Make sure to read the fine print before signing up for a rewards program.  Some have the right to keep your personal contact information for as long as they deem necessary. Others will charge hefty interest fees if you don't pay off your card each month.

What is a Rewards Card?

reward programs

A rewards card, also called a loyalty card, looks similar to a credit card or debit card.  But it is actually a card that is designed to get you to shop more often at certain businesses in return for rewards.  Rewards can include cash back, discounts, free things, trips, and more. Each company has their own system for rewards points and what they offer as a reward.

Perks of Using a Rewards Card

reward programs

With a rewards card, you may earn points for cash back, bonuses, discounts, birthday gifts, trips, and more.  Make sure to pay off your card each month so that you truly are earning and not spending in interest penalties.

How to Apply for a Rewards Card

rewards program

The easiest way to apply for a rewards card is to either talk directly to a cashier at a place that you'd like to apply for a rewards card, or visit their online site.  Both avenues should have information on how to apply for a rewards card.

Overview of Businesses That Offer Reward Cards/Programs

Walgreens - Balance Rewards

rewards program

With the Balance Rewards Program, you can earn points for buying selected items.  You can then redeem those points at a later date for in-store dollar credit. You can sign up to become a member when you checkout, at their photo kiosks, by downloading the Walgreens App, or by visiting their website and joining online.

CVS-Extra Care

With CVS you can sign up for their ExtraCare Card Program.  You'll earn bonuses each time that your card gets swiped for your purchases.  Here are just some of the things that you can earn:

  • 2% cash back on your purchases (restrictions apply)
  • $5 in Extra Bucks for every 10 prescriptions that you have filled
  • Special coupons and offers at the bottom of your receipts
  • Sign up for emails at cvs.com/email to receive coupons all year long.
  • If you register your ExtraCare Card online, you will get a free gift on your birthday.

Dick's Sporting Goods-ScoreCard Rewards

reward programs

Earn points every time you shop in store or online by becoming a Dick's ScoreCard Rewards Member.  Every time you spend $100 you will get 1 point.  When you earn 3 points ($300 of purchases) you can get a $10 gift certificate.

Huggies Rewards

reward programs

You can collect the reward codes off of Huggie Diapers, Wipes, and/or Training Pants.  Then simply log on to the Huggies Rewards website to redeem the codes for free magazine subscriptions, photos, formula, toys, and more.

Starbucks Rewards Card

reward programs

Register for a Starbucks Rewards Program by buying a Starbucks Gift Card.  When you use your card, you will earn 1 star which equals 2 stars for every $1 spent.  This can all add up to free food and drinks.  With a Starbucks Rewards Card, you are also eligible for free birthday rewards and free in-store refills.

Big Lots - Buzz Club

reward programs

With this rewards card, you become eligible for a 20% discount on your Big Lots purchases. You'll also be alerted to specials, promotions, deals, and limited time offers before they're advertised to the general public. You'll receive email notices of new products throughout the year.  There are some restrictions that apply, such as discounts can never be used for milk, dairy products, eggs, previous purchases, gift cards, calling cards, alcohol, charitable donations, rentals, or deposits.  Each member must have their own membership card. It can't be shared with another person, even members of your immediate family.

Kohl's Yes2You Rewards

reward programs

If you sign up for at Yes2You Rewards Card, you’ll earn one point for every dollar you spend on qualifying purchases made in-store and online. For every 100 points you earn in this program, you’ll get $5 in Kohl’s Cash. Your points will expire after 1 year if you don't redeem them.  Also, once you convert your points to Kohl's Cash, you only have 30 days to use it.  Just make sure to pay off your Kohl's Rewards Card every month, or you will receive big interest penalties.

Target REDcard Debit Card

reward programs

With a Target REDcard Debit Card, purchases are paid for by withdrawing directly from your account (just like a check).  You can then earn rewards for your purchases such as 5% off of what you buy.  You'll get other perks too, like free shipping off of any Target.com purchase.

On the downside, the discount will not apply to prescriptions, eye exams, gift cards, prepaid cards, gift wrap services, and shipping costs.

Rite Aid Wellness + Plenti Card

reward programs

With a Plenti card, you can earn points in a number of different ways, but they all end up in the same bank of points for you to spend at eligible locations.  Some of the places you can earn include AT&T cell service, participating supermarkets, Mobil and Exxon station, Macy's, Rite Aid, and more.  Plenti points are worth at least 1 cent each. So 1,000 Plenti points will get you at least $10 worth of rewards at a Plenti merchant.

Sephora Beauty Insider

reward programs

With each dollar spent, you earn 1 point that can be redeemed for free products or exclusive trips.  It is free to be a Beauty Insider, but VIP members must spend at least $350 per calendar year to stay active. Rouge members are required to spend $1,000 or more each year. Note that there has been a recent change to their rewards program that happened to upset a lot of people. Starting on July 10, 2017, card members started having only 18 months to make a purchase, claim their free birthday gift, and/or cash in their points before they expire for good.

Conclusion

In today's article, I've covered what a rewards card is and how to apply for one.  I've also gone over different rewards programs, along with some pros and cons associated with each.  If you apply for a rewards card, make sure to read the fine print first.  Also make sure that you pay off your card each month.  Rewards cards can carry very high interest rates if they are not paid in full each month.  And on a final note, make sure to keep track of when your points expire so that you don't miss out on the rewards that you have earned.  If you play your cards correctly, you may get some great discounts and even free products. Happy Shopping!
