3 Steps To Getting A Passport Quickly and Easily

If you are traveling out of the country, you are going to need a passport.  There are some steps and procedures that you will need to follow to receive a passport along with a waiting period.  I’m going to go over the steps that are required to get a passport in today’s article. So, let’s get started!

Passport Application

If you are applying for your first passport, it is going to be mandatory that you apply in person. Also, if you were under the age of 16 years when you first got a passport and are now older than 16 years of age and applying for a passport, you will need to apply in person.  You will also be required to apply in person if your previous passport was misplaced, stolen, or issued more than 15 years ago.

Required Documents

Birth Record

When applying for a passport, you will need to bring a birth certificate, report of birth abroad, naturalization certificate, or certificate of citizenship.

Identification

You will need to show proof that it is you who is applying for this passport.  Accepted identifications are naturalization certificate, valid driver’s license, current government ID, and current military ID.

Photo

You will need to have a photo taken for your passport. This is something that you can do on your own.  Make sure that the photographer that you choose is aware of the requirements for your passport photo.  Make sure to wear regular clothing.  No uniforms are allowed.  If you wear a wig or glasses, they should be worn for the photo but not glasses or a hat.  You will need one clear color photo for your passport.

Required Form

The application for the passport form that you will need is Form DS-11. This form can be completed online and printed.  You can find this form and download it from the U.S. Department of State’s website.  You may need to sign it in person, so do not sign the form until you are asked to do so by the acceptance facility or passport agency.

Finishing the Process

The final step involved with applying for a passport is to go to an acceptance facility or passport agency and apply in person.  Visit the U.S. Department of State’s website to find the nearest location in your area.

Be prepared to present all of your documents including the form, photos, and your ID.  You also will be required to pay a fee that will begin the processing of your passport.  Expect to wait up to 10 weeks to receive your passport.  If you need or would like your passport sooner, you may pay an extra fee to expedite the processing and have your passport in around 14 days or so.  The status of your passport will be routinely updated online for you to check on.

Passport Renewal

It is easier to apply for a passport renewal than it is to get a new passport.  There will be much fewer documents that you will need to submit.  You can also send the application in by mail.  The nice thing is that you don’t have to appear in person unless you will be traveling in less than two weeks.

If your travel date is within 30 days, you can get an expedited service by mail in up to 3 weeks.   You can also submit the renewal form at a regional center if you’d like a faster service.  People who have difficulty traveling to an agency may use a registered courier.

Summary

Applying for a passport is not a hard process.  However, it does take some time and planning.  Make sure to plan several months before you need to travel.  Make sure to gather all of the required documents that I’ve mentioned in this article and report in person to get the process started. Happy travelling!
