5 Home Remedies and Lifestyle Changes That Will Clear Up Your Adult Acne

Acne is a condition of the skin that occurs when hair follicles become plugged with dead skin cells and oil.  This condition can cause a host of problems such as blackheads, pimples, and whiteheads.  Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, shoulders, and upper back. Though there are many topical treatments you can find at drugstores across the country, some prefer to try a more natural approach. Today we are talking about home remedies and lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your adult acne.

Home Remedies to Try

Take a Zinc Supplement

Studies have shown that people with acne have lower levels of zinc in their blood.  Taking zinc can help you get rid of acne, as well as prevent acne from appearing.  Many studies have been done, and they proved that people who take zinc could quickly overcome acne.  One such study gave 48 patients oral zinc supplements three times per day.  After eight weeks, 38 of the patients had 80-100% of their acne gone.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Once again, apple cider vinegar comes to the rescue!  This vinegar is used to cure almost all health, and skin issues, including healing sunburns, rashes, helping you lose weight, and fight viruses.  Because it contains several organic acids, it is known to help get rid of acne.  The lactic acid in it will improve the appearance of acne scars.  It will also help dry excess oil, which is what causes acne.  Keep in mind that apple cider vinegar can cause burns and irritations, so you may want to start by using a small amount of it.

How to use: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar and three parts water.  If you have sensitive skin, add more water.  Before applying onto your skin, wash your skin so that it is clean.  Using a cotton ball, apply the apple cider vinegar mixture onto your skin.  Allow it to sit 5 to 20 seconds, and then rinse your skin with water.  Continue doing this process 1 to 2 times per day.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil helps with many different skin issues.  One such issue is adult acne.  If you want a healthy and natural remedy for acne, tea tree oil is a great choice.

How to use: Mix 1 part tea tree oil with 9 parts water.  Using a cotton swab, apply the mixture to the acne.  Repeat this process 1 to 2 times per day.  You can apply a moisturizer with it if you want to, though it isn’t necessary.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera contains salicylic acid and sulfur, which can help treat acne.  Studies have shown that aloe vera can be very effective when treating acne.

How to use: If you are using aloe vera gel from your own aloe vera plant, then start by scraping the gel from the plant with a spoon.  Apply the gel directly onto your skin.  Repeat this process 1 to 2 times per day.  If you don’t have an aloe vera plant, you can also buy aloe vera gel from the store.  Keep in mind that the gel should only contain aloe vera.  Avoid buying products that have added ingredients.

Witch Hazel

Although studies haven’t proven that witch hazel can clear up acne, some studies say that witch hazel may help.   Witch hazel is used to help treat many health issues, including dandruff, insect bites, burns, and bruises.

How to use: Mix 1 tablespoon of witch hazel bark with 1 cup of water in a saucepan.  Soak the witch hazel for about 30 minutes.  Once 30 minutes is up, boil the mixture over the stove.  Then reduce to a simmer, and cover it.  Keep it like this for 10 minutes.  After 10 minutes of simmering, remove the mixture from heat and let it sit for another 10 minutes.  Strain the liquid, and store it in a sealed container.  Using a cotton ball, apply it to your skin 1 to 2 times per day.

Tips to Try

If you are suffering from acne, it may seem like it will never go away.  Thankfully, there are some tips that can help get rid of and prevent acne.  Besides using some of the home remedies I listed earlier in this article, you can try some of these tips.

Don’t Eat Dairy Foods

Studies have shown that dairy foods may cause acne in some people.  Because of this, it is best to avoid dairy foods while treating acne, and even after your acne is gone.  However, for some people cutting out dairy products did not help.

Workout

Not only is working out healthy for your body, but it is also very healthy for your skin.  When you workout, you sweat.  Sweating will help remove toxins, impurities, and bacteria from your skin.  As a result, you will prevent acne from appearing.  Make sure to take a shower after your workout.

Eat Healthily

Your diet can affect your skin greatly.  Avoid greasy foods, such as fries, chips, and fast foods.  Instead, try eating more vegetables and fruits.  Not only will your skin be free of acne, but you will also feel healthier.

Wash Your Face

To avoid acne, wash your face twice a day.  It is recommended to wash your face once in the morning, and once in the evening.  Also take showers often.  Keep in mind that you shouldn’t wash your face more than twice a day, since this may cause dry skin.  And dry skin will produce more oils, which can make acne worse.

Clean Your Smartphone

Our hands often have bacteria on them.  When you touch your phone, your hands have bacteria on them which bacteria transport to your phone.  To make matters worse, after your phone collects bacteria, you then place it up to your ear when the phone rings.  As a result, you will experience acne.  To avoid this from happening, wash your phone often.  Also, try washing your hands before touching your phone.  Instead of touching your phone in the bathroom, in a school, in a hospital, or in any public places, wait until you wash your hands or phone.

Don’t Drink Alcohol

Because alcohol dehydrates your body and skin, it can cause acne.  Keep in mind that the effect alcohol has on individuals varies.  Some people break out after having one glass of alcohol, while others can drink lots of glasses with no problems with their skin.  Overall, it is best to avoid alcohol altogether.

Keep Your Hair Away From Your Face

If you have bangs or long hair, it is important to keep it away from your face.  If you have oily hair, wash your hair often to avoid breakouts on your face.  Also, avoid putting fragrances and gels on your hair.  This may cause acne to develop on your skin.

Avoid Stress

Although we know that overall stress is not healthy for our bodies, some studies have shown that stress may specifically cause acne.  To prevent this from happening, try avoiding stressful situations.  And don’t forget to relax.  Relaxing and resting are some of the best ways to get rid of acne.
