Are you shopping for a co-sleeper?  Today I am going over the top ten best co-sleepers on the market, as well as tips on deciding if you need a co-sleeper, the types of co-sleepers, co-sleeper weight limits, co-sleeper accessories, how to use a baby bassinet as a co-sleeper, and tips for safely co-sleeping. I hope that this article helps you when shopping for a co-sleeper.

What Is a Baby Co-Sleeper?

A baby co-sleeper is designed for babies that co-sleep with their parents.  Baby co-sleepers come in many different designs.  Some come in an oval-shaped pillow that your baby sleeps in, and others are similar to a crib.  If you will be co-sleeping with your baby, a co-sleeper is recommended.  It can prevent all the dangers that co-sleeping can bring, such as suffocation and rolling on top of your baby.

Do I Need a Baby Co-Sleeper?

This decision is totally up to you.  Some people co-sleep with their baby without using a co-sleeper.  Others decide not to co-sleep, but to instead purchase a baby crib or bassinet.  Before you decide if you’d like a co-sleeper, consider if you want to try co-sleeping.  Co-sleeping is definitely an easy way to check on your baby throughout the night.  You can also easily feed your baby if you are breastfeeding because you don’t even have to get out of the bed.

Here Are The Best Co-Sleepers of 2018!

Types Of Baby Co-Sleepers

There are many different types of co-sleepers.  Some come in the form of a co-sleeper bassinet, a bedside co-sleeper, and even a co-sleeper bed.  Here is a list of the types of co-sleepers.

Co-Sleeper Pillow

A co-sleeper pillow is basically a pillow that is shaped so that your baby can lay in it.  It allows you to place your baby in the middle, side, or anywhere else in the bed without worrying about hurting your little one.  It has small sides that surround your baby which will prevent you from rolling onto your baby.

Sidecar

A sidecar is a co-sleeper that attaches under the mattress of your bed.  It is similar to a crib, but is attaches to your bed.  Another unique feature to the sidecar co-sleeper is that it has three sides with a railing that looks just like crib sides, but it does not have four sides.  Instead, the side without the railing is placed right next to the bed, so that it is like an extension of your bed. The only thing is, it is not the full length of the bed.  This prevents you from rolling over onto your child.  The only disadvantage about this type of co-sleeper is that your baby has a chance of rolling over onto your side of the bed.  To prevent this from happening, you may need to place a co-sleeper pillow in the sidecar.

Bedside Co-Sleeper

A bedside co-sleeper is basically a crib or baby bassinet that is placed beside a bed.  The advantages to a bedside co-sleeper is that you won’t roll onto your baby, but your baby is still close to you.  A disadvantage is that if you are breastfeeding, you will need to get out of bed in order to reach your child (unless the crib is very close to the bed).  Also, your baby will not be able to feel you or maybe even see you, which can cause stress in young babies.  Such stress will make his or her breathing and heart rate irregular.  However, when your baby can feel and see you, most babies will calm down.  Although a beside co-sleeper is very close to the bed, depending on where you position it, your baby may not know you are there when the light is off and it’s dark.

Co-Sleeper For Toddlers

As your baby grows, you will need to replace his or her small co-sleeper with a larger co-sleeper.  That is where a co-sleeper for toddlers can come in handy.  Basically, you can use any type of crib or bed for a toddler.  A 3 in 1 crib may be a good option.  It will convert from a crib to a day bed to a toddler bed.  This means that as your child grows, you can change the bed to fit your child’s needs.  A nice feature about a 3 in 1 crib is that it allows you to remove one of the sides and slide the crib over to the bed so that it is like an extension of the bed.  In other words, it is similar to a sidecar except much bigger. Another option for you is to buy a co-sleeper pillow for toddlers.  It is like an extra large co-sleeper pillow, and it is specifically made for toddlers.

Co-Sleeper Weight Limit

Each co-sleeper will have a slightly different weight limit.  The Arms Reach Co-Sleeper has a 30 pound weight limit, while others have a smaller weight limit of about 25 pounds. Because growing babies can quickly reach the weight limit, you will want to get a co-sleeper with a larger weight limit.  If possible, you may want to try a crib or sidecar, since they can hold more weight than baby bassinets.  Make sure that you always follow the weight recommendations, and never allow your child to sleep in a co-sleeper if he or she is above the weight limit.  The weight limit is there for a reason, and you should follow it.

Co-Sleeper Accessories

While you are shopping for co-sleepers, you may want to shop for some co-sleeper accessories.  Here is a list of some other things you may want to buy:

  • Co-Sleeper Cover – If your baby is sleeping in a sidecar or baby crib, you will need a cover.  Try to avoid buying blankets though, as this could suffocate your baby.  Instead, dress your baby in warm clothes.
  • Mattress – Once again, a mattress is a must-have if your baby is sleeping in a sidecar, baby crib, or baby bassinet.
  • Co-Sleeper Canopy – You may want to buy a canopy to attach over your co-sleeper.
  • Toys – Some cribs and bassinets come with toys that hang from above.  You can either buy your own toys to hang, or buy a baby bassinet that has this feature.

Can I Use a Baby Bassinet?

Baby bassinets are designed to be put beside a bed, not on a bed.  However, baby bassinets are often listed under the bedside co-sleeper category.  If you are wanting to have your baby close by without the dangers of rolling onto your baby or suffocating him or her with covers, then a baby bassinet may be a good choice.  You can also use a baby crib as an alternative to a co-sleeper.

Tips For Co-Sleeping Safely

As harmless as co-sleeping may seem, there are some dangers to it.  For example, you or your spouse could accidentally roll onto your baby, or too many blankets could suffocate your baby.  One study found that about 130 babies die per year from co-sleeping improperly.  Fortunately, there are some tips for co-sleeping safely.  Let’s go over these safety tips.

Don’t Have Too Many Blankets In the Bed

Minimize how many blankets you have in the bed.  Too many blankets or a heavy blanket too close to your child’s face can suffocate him or her.  Make sure the blanket you do have is made from breathable material.  If you think you or your baby will be cold without blankets, consider wearing warm clothes.  That way you won’t feel the urge to pull the covers up too far.

Let Your Spouse Know That Baby Is In the Bed

Before you take your baby to bed with you, let your spouse know that he or she is in the bed. While it may seem harmless to let your baby sleep in the bed without your spouse knowing, your spouse may accidentally roll over onto the baby.  If you think your spouse may forget that your baby is in the bed, place the baby on your side of the bed (the perimeter of the bed) instead of in the middle.

Make Sure Baby Sleeps On His Or Her Back

Always have your baby sleep on his or her back.  Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is lower in babies who are sleeping on their backs rather than their stomach or sides.  If you will be breastfeeding your baby throughout the night, remember to place your baby on his or her back when you are done breastfeeding.

Don’t Smoke Or Drink Alcohol

Smoking is obviously a no-no when you have a baby since the smoke is unhealthy for their little lungs.  But also make sure you do not drink alcohol right before bed, as this could result in you sleeping soundly and not being alert.  What does this mean?  It means you may accidentally roll onto your baby and you wouldn’t know it.  Also, not being alert means you may not wake up when your baby is hungry or needs a diaper changed.  It is important that you are alert, even when you are sleeping.

Get a King Size Bed

A king size bed will give you, your spouse, and your baby more room to move around without rolling on top of each other.  Although you should be sleeping close enough to your baby so that you’ll know when he or she wakes, a king size bed will allow you to move around without crushing your little one.
